My Thoughts – Defining Your Photography Style

Every pro photographer specializes in a certain kind of photography. What? I have heard this a couple of times in different articles. Most recently I was reading another photographer’s blog and she also said this. I have to admit every time I hear this I get discouraged. Why are they saying this? I even find myself worrying I  may not succeed as a photographer.

Maybe I am naive but I don’t believe it. I am a creative person. I love to learn new things, try new things. I usually stay more creative by once in a while changing what I photograph. Expanding my horizons so to speak.  I can’t do one thing, I get bored to easily. In my opinion specializing in one type of photography would be the same as putting a box over a flower. It won’t get the sun and rain it needs to stay alive, you’ve killed it. If you tell someone to only do one thing you are limiting them. Not everyone is like that. If it works for you by all means only focus on one type of photography. But personally if you want to be creative and have fun then I say go for it. If it is truly what you want you’ll make it work. I refuse to believe that I have to put myself in a box to be taken seriously as a photographer.

If you think I am wrong or have anything you would like to share with me please feel free to comment.

Thanks, Alicia
